SANTORINI- A DREAM COME TRUE
Off the bucket list- Santorini,Greece❤️- Santorini is an enchantress, seducing you with its allure, with its indescribable intrigue, and making you come back for more. Filled with multicolored cliffs that soar above pristine blue waters, perched with quaint little villages, boasting incredible panoramic views and showing off its blazing white houses with symbolic deep blue roofs – Santorini is truly something else. It’s the perfect getaway and the ultimate romantic travel destination!
HOW TO GET THERE-
You can choose from 4 ferries per day that take off from Athens to Santorini. We did the Athens- Mykonos- Santorini way! There is a detailed blog about the ferry timings cost etc on my site. Check it out if you haven’t already! The cost usually ranges from 20 EUR to 76 EUR and the overall journey takes from 5 to 8 hours.
Now Santorini has two major towns. Firá is the capital of Santorini – the place to find your grocery stores, a myriad of cafés and restaurants and the spot to party into the wee hours. Surrounded by vineyards and filled with whitewashed cubic dwellings surrounding the Aegean Sea.
Firostefani and Imerovigli are nearby Firá but maintain their seclusive and relaxing vibe. Just hop over to Firá when you need to inject a bit of nightlife into your holiday!
Oia seems like the perfect spot to stay if you are looking for the best sunset views, relaxing atmosphere (although touristy) and amazing restaurants. Not many shops here but oh! the luxury in these high-end hotels is impressive!
The towns of Perissa, Perivolos and Kamari don’t have vistas toward the scenic volcano but instead contain the best beaches you’ll find on Santorini.
WHERE TO STAY-
We stayed in a hotel called Villa Agnadi which was pretty lovely too.
Costa Marina Villas (Fira)-Located just 200 m away from the central square of Fira this guesthouse offers rooms with free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and a fridge..
Smaragdi Hotel (Perivolos- Perissa)Situated just 80 m away from Perivolos beach, Smaragdi Hotel offers spacious studios and apartments with a kitchenette, free wi-fi, and air conditioning.
Astarte Suites (Akrotiri)-Located 12km from Fira and 4km from the archaeological site of Akrotiri, this romantic all-suite hotel is situated on a clifftop and enjoys breathtaking scenic views.
Canaves Oia Santorini-Built on the side of a cliff, Canaves is a polished all-suite hotel 10km away from Fira.
WHAT TO PACK–
Flat shoes because hikes, light weight clothes & bikinis to keep cool because it gets very hot in Santorini! In the evening it went off very chill , pack a camera, a hat is also a very good item to pop in your case! A detailed blog on tips to travelling where I’ve written what to pack! Check it out- HERE
Ammoudi bay- Now, before haunting at Santorini, the cruise takes you to this amazing place for you to have lunch. Around the corner Agios Nicholas rock which is a great spot for cliff diving and sunbathing. Facing the water, head left down the path past the restaurants until you see it!
1. THE DOME OF SANTORINI-
The blue domes are typical of the Cycladic islands, and there are several in Oia (and around in other Santorini towns as well as on other Cycladic islands). The church in Greece is orthodox and is conducted and managed by the Greek church.
2. SUNSET IN OIA-
National Geographic rightly says the best sunset in the world is experienced in Oia! A baby being born, the feeling of first love, the magnificence of life- it will hit you all at once. I’ve written a detailed blog on sunset in Oia- check it out HERE
3. PERISSA BLACK SAND BEACH–
This beautiful beach features unique black sand juxtaposed with crystal clear waters, making your beach experience unlike any other you’ve had in your life. You’ll have a massive rock called Mesa Vouno soaring from the sea, and is usually the main attraction of the place.
4.THE RED SAND BEACH OF AKROTIRI-
The red Beach is a brilliant example of a miraculous volcanic beach and the most photographed one in Santorini, with a unique landscape of red and black volcanic rocks contrasted with the blue waters of the sea. What’s more, it has a fantastic sea bed ideal for snorkeling. It’s minutes away from Akrotiri.
The next day we sailed to the port in Thira, a major island in Santorini -The first stop was Nea Kameni, the volcano, where we hiked for about an hour and half while learning about the history of the caldera and the volcano& Palea Kameni ,hot springs our next stop.
5.THE HOT SPRINGS OF PALEA KAMENI
I got to swim in them for 30-40minutes , house to the old burnt volcanic Palea Kameni and the new Nea Kameni islands. Diving in the healing hot water springs was the most rejuvenating experience of my life. They say the yellow waters filled with sulfur have therapeutic properties. A detailed blog on them HERE
6.HIKING TO THE VOLCANO IN NEA KAMENI-
The best way to explore a new city is by getting lost into its streets, narrow alleys and more so – HIKING!
Then we headed back to the Oia town making sure not to miss the sunset and had a very fulfilling dinner by the sea along with some wine tasting- there were different types of wine – from Assyrtico, Athiri and Aidani It is easily one of the most beautiful days of my life.
7. WINE TASTING-
Wine has been produced on Santorini for centuries and its uniqueness is due to the volcanic soils in which the grape vines grow. The main grape variety grown here is Assyrtiko, an indigenous white which accounts for as much as 80% of the vines on the island. Other varieties found here are Aidani and Athiri, and the red Aegean variety of Mandilaria. On the wine tour we learnt about the unusual way vines are grown here and, of course, got to taste some of the island’s fabulous wine. A detailed post about it – HERE
WHAT TO EAT – HERE
Scuba divers will find plenty of dive shops along the coast of Santorini. The Nea Kameni crater is a popular destination, or nearby wreck sites. You may not find the mind-blowing coral of the Great Barrier Reef or the Caribbean seas, but divers will enjoy a peek underwater at Santorini.
9. THE MONASTERY OF PROPHET ELIAS
It resembles a fortress and owns an impressive bell tower, is built on the highest point of the whole island, on the mountaintop. Consequently, it becomes obvious that it undoubtedly offers the most spectacular panoramic views on the island.
Santorini is breathtakingly gorgeous and especially during the time the sun sets, the setting gets so astonishing that it fills everybody with rapture. Let me know about your views and experiences in the comments section below!
